Caulfield North Residences

Caulfield North, Melbourne

2020 - 2023

From the street, one observes the regular grid of deep-set window openings, featuring the first-floor balconettes. The curved planters that line each window are a subtle nod to the forms of the prominent Art Deco apartment block located on the corner of the street. Modest shifts in the depth of the façade allow the building form to respond to the neighbouring properties' setbacks whilst retaining the design's informed simplicity.

Located in a tightly held inner-city neighbourhood, the Caulfield North Residences are a collection of 4 generously-appointed apartments set amongst lush gardens. Each home has been conceived with consideration to aspect, amenity and materiality.

The architectural mass is similarly expressed in the interiors. Framing elements such as deep pilasters, beams and tray ceilings provide solidity and protection. Collectively, they create intentional thresholds between the various spaces of each apartment and complement the generous array of window and door openings that line the facades. In this sense, the Caulfield North Residences are grounded in the time-honored notion of 'prospect and refuge'.

Designed to age gracefully the internal material palette is decidedly restrained. Travertine slabs, parquetry flooring and venetian plaster offset the bold architectural expression, producing a nuanced and finely textured backdrop for the residents' individual furnishings.
